The blockchain landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, moving away from public networks and towards private ones. This shift is exemplified by Tempo, a Stripe-backed payment blockchain that has introduced a detailed proposal for private enterprise stablecoin transactions. As a highly institutionally credentialed blockchain, Tempo's emphasis on privacy sends a clear signal that the industry is prioritizing this aspect. The question is no longer whether blockchains will be private, but rather what kind of privacy will be built. The issue with public blockchains lies in their transparency, where every transaction, wallet, and balance are visible to anyone. This is a major concern for financial markets, where such visibility can lead to front-running, strategy mapping, and targeting by criminals. Tempo's solution, known as Zones, involves private parallel blockchains connected to the main network, where participants can transact privately, and only cryptographic proofs of validity are visible to the public. However, this model relies on trusting an intermediary, the Zone operator, who has visibility into all transactions within their Zone. An alternative approach is zero-knowledge cryptography, which enables parties to prove the validity of transactions without revealing underlying data.
