Trump Administration Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Federal Reserve Nominee
The US Department of Justice's decision to abandon its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has brought President Donald Trump closer to exerting control over the country's financial and economic policies. This development may pave the way for the confirmation of Trump's nominee, Kevin Warsh, who is awaiting a final Senate vote after appearing in a confirmation hearing. Warsh's path to confirmation was previously hindered by Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who had threatened to block the nomination as long as the DOJ pursued its investigation into Powell over cost overruns in a Federal Reserve building project. With the investigation now dropped, Attorney General Jeanine Pirro has requested that the Fed's inspector general investigate the matter and issue a report. The news has significantly boosted the odds of Warsh's confirmation before May 15, according to prediction markets. The ability to install his own nominee at the helm of the Federal Reserve would not only give Trump greater influence over US monetary policy but also provide him with a key ally on the Fed board, which is responsible for making decisions on financial policy, including regulations governing the crypto industry and stablecoin issuers. Senator Elizabeth Warren, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, has criticized the move, characterizing it as an attempt to clear the path for Warsh's confirmation. She noted that the administration is still pursuing a separate case against Fed Governor Lisa Cook. Senator Tillis, on the other hand, has expressed his support for Warsh, describing him as a 'great nominee' and indicating that he would vote in favor of his confirmation now that the DOJ has dropped its investigation into Powell.
