The Unique Value Proposition Conundrum in Web3 VC

The typical Web3 VC pitch has become all too familiar, with claims of deep ecosystem relationships and value-added services that have lost their significance due to overuse. Liquidity providers have grown weary of these generic pitches, which often lack substance and fail to demonstrate a unique value proposition. At TBV, we realized that our initial pitch was no different, so we decided to take a more rigorous approach to building something distinctive. Studies have consistently shown that emerging managers outperform established funds, delivering higher returns on average and reaching top-quartile performance more frequently. However, they struggle to communicate their unique value to clients, resulting in capital flowing to established brands rather than potential. To address this, we focused on creating a product rather than just a pitch. We asked ourselves what a fund truly owns, beyond just its connections. The answer lay in building something tangible, such as events, data, and platform value for founders. This approach is defensible and provides a clear reason for clients to choose one fund over another. We developed a people-centric deal engine through our events, which drew over 43,000 attendees and more than 100 partners in 2025. This deliberate infrastructure feeds into our AI-driven deal engine, creating a self-sustaining flywheel. Other VC firms, such as Outlier Ventures and Paradigm, have also rethought their approaches, focusing on building platforms of support and contributing to protocols. What these models share is that the fund itself is a product with utility beyond capital. The question is no longer 'how do we tell a better story?' but 'how do we build something that makes the story self-evident?' The good news is that there isn't just one answer, and the next generation of interesting managers will share this focus on building something unique. Those who build real infrastructure now will be hard to displace later, while those still relying on generic pitches will find themselves left behind.
