Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has surged past $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This upward movement occurred as investor sentiment improved following the extension of the ceasefire between the US and Iran by President Donald Trump, also leading to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of fluctuating between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, Bitcoin's recent breakout has provided momentum traders with the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is confirmed, and Bitcoin's recent performance is a clear indication of this, potentially attracting more buyers and further increasing momentum. As stated by the laws of motion, an object in motion remains so unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that can be applied to financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they were waiting for. On-chain data supports this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated that the decreasing Bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more being transferred to long-term holders, is resulting in increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital urges caution due to the persistent richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that crypto trends currently seem tied to oil prices and interest rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, security risks in DeFi persist due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The path forward remains uncertain, with markets likely to remain in a holding pattern until there is clearer direction from the Fed or a move in oil prices.
