Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Domination by Tech Giants
The next significant turning point for the crypto industry is likely to come from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, the co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of Consensys. In a recent conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that autonomous and semi-autonomous agents will be capable of transacting, coordinating, and verifying each other on decentralized networks, leveraging crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the idea that blockchain technology is particularly suited for machine intelligences but does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, he predicts that increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as the intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, Lubin warned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large technology firms, it could pose significant risks. He stressed the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other in transparent environments. As part of this broader shift, products like MetaMask are evolving. Lubin described MetaMask as being rebuilt as a new type of neobank that users own and control, part of a transition toward a personal money operating system. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy on behalf of users. Lubin also pointed to structural changes in the Ethereum ecosystem, including the rise of corporate chains, which he believes will become more common as institutions seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he expects assets to be issued on Ethereum's base layer for durability, he noted that stablecoins are a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Lubin also discussed the convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance, predicting a more granular and programmable global economy. Despite the potential risks associated with quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
