Ripple Unveils Plan to Make XRP Ledger Quantum-Resistant by 2028

The emergence of quantum computing poses a significant threat to blockchain security, prompting Ripple to develop a detailed roadmap for making the XRP Ledger quantum-resistant. The plan, set to be completed by 2028, involves a four-phase approach to ensure the long-term security and integrity of the XRP Ledger. Ripple's plan comes on the heels of Google's warning that quantum computers could potentially compromise the security of Bitcoin, the world's largest blockchain, with relatively less computational power than previously estimated. In response, the XRP Ledger is taking proactive measures to mitigate these risks. The primary concerns surrounding quantum computing and the XRP Ledger include the potential for quantum computers to reverse-engineer private keys from exposed public keys, thereby draining coin holdings, and the heightened risk for accounts that have held coins for extended periods. To address these concerns, Ripple's four-phase plan is designed to provide a structured response. Phase 1, known as Q-Day readiness, is an emergency measure aimed at protecting exposed public keys and long-held accounts in the event of an unexpected quantum breakthrough. This phase involves implementing a hard shift, where classical public-key signatures are no longer accepted, and enabling safe recovery for account owners via zero-knowledge proofs. Phase 2, currently underway, involves a comprehensive assessment of quantum vulnerability across the XRPL network and testing defenses recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Phase 3, targeted for completion in the second half of 2026, will see the controlled integration of post-quantum measures, allowing developers to test and build against new cryptography without disrupting the live network.
