The Lightning Network: Not Beyond Repair

However, this assertion warrants a more nuanced response. As a respected Bitcoin developer, Wertheimer's underlying concern about quantum computers posing a long-term challenge to cryptographic systems is valid. Nevertheless, the notion that Lightning is 'helplessly broken' is misleading and overlooks the ongoing efforts of the Bitcoin development community to address this issue. The threat of quantum computers to Lightning is real but more specific and conditional than initially suggested. An attacker would need to obtain public keys, which are protected by a hash while channels are open, and then use Shor's algorithm to derive the private key. The realistic attack window is limited to the force-close period, during which a commitment transaction is broadcast on-chain, and the locking script becomes publicly visible. The development community is actively working on post-quantum proposals, including SHRINCS, SHRIMPS, and BIP-360, to make Lightning quantum-resistant. Rather than abandoning Lightning, businesses should focus on whether the teams building its infrastructure are aware of and planning for the potential threats. The answer, based on current research, is affirmative. In conclusion, the Lightning Network is not irreparably broken; it faces the same cryptographic challenges as the entire digital financial system and has a development community working to address them.
