Rethinking Privacy in the Blockchain Era
The future of blockchains lies in private networks, marking a significant shift from their origins in open-source technology. A recent proposal by Tempo, a Stripe-backed payment blockchain, has sparked a crucial debate about the kind of privacy the industry should build. The question is no longer whether institutional chains will be private, but rather what kind of privacy they will implement. Public chains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, have been successful in transferring value and enabling programmable value, but their transparency has become a major obstacle for institutional adoption. The lack of privacy on these networks makes them unsuitable for financial markets, where sensitive information needs to be protected. The solution lies in private blockchains, such as Tempo's Zones, which allow for private parallel blockchains connected to the main network. However, this approach requires trusting an intermediary, the Zone operator, to manage transactions. An alternative approach is zero-knowledge cryptography, which enables parties to prove the validity of transactions without revealing underlying data. The industry must now choose between privacy through trusted operators or cryptographic guarantees that require no trust at all.
