Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $78,278.51, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, thereby lifting the broader cryptocurrency market. This development follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. The recent upward movement in bitcoin's price has ended the period of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 seen in March and early April, providing momentum traders with the long-awaited signal to enter the market. Momentum traders typically buy when there is evidence of an upward trend. Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as such proof, potentially attracting more buyers and adding to the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market had been constrained within the $65 to $75 range for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy, while momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a basis for their investment decisions. On-chain indicators also support this outlook, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange noted that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more being transferred to long-term holders, is contributing to increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital urged caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm noted that cryptocurrency trends are currently tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, as evidenced by the recent draining of over $3 million from the Sui-based Volo protocol.
