Parasite Pool, which launched in April 2025, successfully mined block 945,601, approximately 48 days after its inaugural block. This block contained 7,398 transactions and garnered 0.002 BTC in fees, with bitcoin valued at $76,213 at the time of the block's creation. The pool's distinctive model diverges from mainstream mining practices by adopting a hybrid approach, where the winning miner receives 1 BTC, and the remaining 2.125 BTC, along with fees, are proportionally distributed among all participants based on their contributed shares since the last block. Notably, participation in this pool is free, and payouts are efficiently routed through the Lightning Network. Bitcoin's security is ensured by computers competing to solve complex cryptographic puzzles every 10 minutes, with the winner earning the right to add the next block of transactions to the blockchain and receiving a substantial reward. Currently, this reward consists of 3.125 BTC plus transaction fees, valued at around $238,000, although this amount is subject to change. The mining landscape is dominated by large-scale industrial operators utilizing specialized ASIC hardware, which consumes significant amounts of electricity. To mitigate the variance in block discovery, mining pools aggregate the hashrate of numerous participants, allowing proceeds to be split based on contribution rather than a winner-takes-all approach. Parasite Pool, founded by the pseudonymous ZK Shark, targets home miners and offers an innovative solution by splitting the block reward. While pure solo pools pay the full block reward minus a fee to the finder, Parasite's model preserves the potential for a significant payday for the winner while ensuring that participants receive satoshis during the intervals between blocks. The pool's hashrate currently stands at 52 petahashes per second, accounting for approximately 0.005% of the bitcoin network's estimated 1-zetahash hashrate.
