The Web3 VC Differentiation Dilemma

The typical Web3 venture capital pitch has become all too familiar, with claims of deep ecosystem relationships and value-added services that have lost their significance due to overuse. Liquidity providers have grown weary of these generic pitches, and the industry continues to rely on unoriginal presentations. At TBV, we realized that our initial pitch was no different from the rest, and we decided to take a more rigorous approach to building a distinctive value proposition. Studies have consistently shown that emerging managers outperform established funds, delivering higher returns on average. However, they struggle to communicate their unique strengths to clients, resulting in capital flowing to established brands rather than promising new managers. To address this, we focused on creating a product rather than a pitch, asking ourselves what tangible assets our fund could own and what defensible value we could create for founders. We landed on events as a key differentiator, developing a people-centric deal engine that would provide a platform for connections, data generation, and value creation. By flipping the traditional model of paying for access, we built an environment that owns the data and creates relationships at scale, feeding them directly into our AI-driven deal engine. Our event series drew over 43,000 attendees and more than 100 partners in 2025, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach. Other VC firms, such as Outlier Ventures and Paradigm, have also found success by rethinking the traditional fund model and focusing on building unique platforms and contributing to the ecosystem. The next generation of interesting managers will share this focus on creating funds with utility beyond capital, making the story self-evident through the value they provide. The good news is that there isn't just one answer, and the Web3 space is ripe for innovation and competition. Managers who build real infrastructure now will be well-positioned for success in the future, while those who rely on generic pitches will find themselves left behind.
