Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, with its token price remaining steady. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, a first for the platform. This marks a significant increase from the 90 million transactions recorded in 2023 and the 100-120 million transactions seen in 2024. Ethereum's smart contract system allows for the automated execution of agreements without the need for intermediaries, with transactions being securely recorded on the blockchain. The recent surge in activity can be attributed to the growth of Layer 2s and stablecoins. Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum, enable cheap transactions that are then batched and settled on the main chain. Stablecoins, tokenized versions of fiat currencies, have also seen significant growth, with the total supply on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion. This growth has contributed to higher transaction counts on the base layer, even when users do not directly interact with it. However, some analysts have raised concerns that the increased activity on Layer 2s may be masking the pressure on base-layer fees. Despite this, the overall trend suggests that Ethereum's usage has undergone a multi-year recovery, which could potentially precede a price movement. The sustainability of this growth will depend on whether the 200 million transaction figure is maintained in Q2 and whether the growth is driven by genuine user adoption rather than bot activity.
