Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its most active quarter to date, with its native token's price remaining relatively stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, surpassing the 200 million mark for the first time. This significant growth follows a period of slow activity, with quarterly transactions bottoming out at around 90 million in 2023. Ethereum's decentralized system enables the secure and automated execution of agreements, eliminating the need for intermediaries. On-chain activity has been on the rise since mid-2025, with each quarter showing increased growth, resulting in a 43% jump in Q1 2026 compared to the previous quarter. Despite this growth, the native token ether has declined by over 50% from its August 2025 high. The majority of Ethereum's traffic is attributed to Layer 2s, which provide cheaper transaction processing and batch settlements on the main chain. Stablecoins have also seen significant adoption, with a record $180 billion in total supply on Ethereum, accounting for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market. While this growth may present opportunities for traders, some analysts caution that Layer 2 activity may be masking base-layer fee pressure, and the long-term impact on Ethereum's price remains to be seen.
