Kelp DAO Suffers $292 Million Exploit

A significant exploit has occurred in the DeFi space, with Kelp DAO's cross-chain bridge being drained of approximately $292 million worth of rsETH. This incident highlights the evolving tactics of North Korea-linked hackers, who are now targeting the foundational assumptions of decentralized systems. The attack on Kelp DAO, a liquid restaking protocol, resulted in the theft of 116,500 rsETH, which represents about 18% of the token's circulating supply. The attacker manipulated the data feeding into the system, forcing it to approve transactions that never actually occurred. The fallout from this exploit is being felt across the DeFi ecosystem, with Aave being exposed to collateral whose backing may be significantly impaired. Aave has since frozen rsETH markets and halted new borrowing against the asset. Meanwhile, Coinbase has commissioned a report on the risks associated with quantum computing, emphasizing the need for preparation and highlighting the potential consequences of a 'fault-tolerant quantum computer' capable of breaking widely used encryption.
