Bitcoin Developers Propose Quantum Defenses, Potentially Freezing Vulnerable Coins

Bitcoin, valued at $77,740.70, was founded on the principle that only the owner's private key can access their coins. However, this promise is being challenged by developers seeking to protect against future quantum computers that could compromise the blockchain. Jameson Loop and other cryptographers have proposed a plan, known as Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)-361, to migrate coins to quantum-resistant addresses or risk having them frozen. This move is in response to a recent Google report warning that a powerful quantum machine could compromise the Bitcoin blockchain more easily than initially thought. The proposal involves a three-phase migration, starting with blocking new bitcoin from being sent to vulnerable addresses, followed by rendering old-style signatures invalid, and finally, a potential rescue phase using zero-knowledge proof. The community is divided, with some viewing the plan as authoritarian and confiscatory, while developers see it as a necessary defensive measure to protect the Bitcoin ecosystem.
