Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The price of bitcoin, currently at $78,082.34, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, subsequently boosting the broader cryptocurrency market. This development follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. The upward movement of bitcoin ended weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically purchase assets when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout serves as proof of this trend. As a result, more buyers may enter the market, further accelerating the momentum. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and the recent breakout is significant as it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, combined with fewer coins available for sale and increasing liquidity, will lead to increased volatility. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The price of bitcoin has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a significant development, as the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January. The focus now shifts to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
