Bitcoin Surpasses Crucial Level as Investors Await Warsh Hearing
Bitcoin is currently trading at $78,309.23, maintaining a positive trajectory above the critical $75,000 threshold. Despite this, analysts urge caution, emphasizing the need for prices to remain above this level beyond Wednesday, when the US-Iran ceasefire is set to expire. The market is pricing in two potential scenarios: an extension and de-escalation, or a renewed escalation and increased oil prices. According to Marex analysts, 'The ceasefire is set to expire Wednesday evening Washington time, and the market has to price two paths... That is why even with BTC strong, the tape can still gap fast. It is headline risk with a timer.' An escalation could lead to oil prices exceeding $119, potentially impacting Asian and global equity markets. The resilience of bitcoin, which remained steady around $70,000 during the March conflict, is being closely watched. As of now, no Iranian delegation has departed for talks in Pakistan, and President Donald Trump has warned of a major escalation if the ceasefire ends without a deal. The upcoming nomination hearing for Federal Reserve chair, Kevin Warsh, is also on analysts' radar. Warsh, known for his 'inflation hawk' stance, opposed interest-rate cuts and quantitative easing after the 2008 crash. His remarks during the session could significantly impact markets, particularly if they reinforce expectations of policy easing. Major cryptocurrencies like ether, solana, and XRP have seen modest gains of less than 2% over the past 24 hours, underperforming bitcoin. In contrast, smaller tokens like XLM and TON have risen by over 5% each, with the CoinDesk Memecoin Index increasing by over 3%. The DeFi Select Index has added 2%, despite the industry-wide fallout from the KelpDAO hack over the weekend. Decentralized lender Aave has been severely impacted, with the total value of crypto assets locked on its platform falling to $16 billion, a decline of nearly $10 billion since before the hack. Aave's native token, AAVE, has declined 18% to $93, while open interest in futures tied to the token has hit a record high, indicating potential for increased volatility.
