Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, with its token price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, marking a significant milestone. This surpasses the quarterly transaction count of 90 million in 2023 and the 100-120 million range in 2024. Ethereum's smart contract blockchain is a decentralized system that enables automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, with transactions being securely processed and recorded on the blockchain. The recent surge in activity began in mid-2025, with each quarter showing higher activity than the last, resulting in a 43% increase from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026. Despite this growth, Ethereum's native token, ether, has decreased by over 50% from its August 2025 high. The majority of the network's traffic is on Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum, offering cheaper transactions that are then batched and settled on the main chain. Stablecoins are also being widely used on Ethereum, with a record total supply of $180 billion, accounting for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market. These trends contribute to higher transaction counts on the base layer through settlement and bridging activity. However, some analysts warn that Layer 2 activity may be masking base-layer fee pressure, and the relationship between transaction growth and token value is complex.
