Major Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots Unveiled by Sam Altman's World Project

The World project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most significant upgrade to the World ID system, aiming to provide 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This development comes at a time when the tech industry is increasingly concerned about the presence of bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. To address this issue, World is focusing on authentication, payments, and internet services. Notably, Altman is also involved in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized code fragments are shared across a distributed network to verify the individual's uniqueness without revealing their identity or personal data. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture to enhance privacy, security, and usability, with new features including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will enable users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms, aiming to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as social media login. The company is introducing various integrations to embed its identity layer across consumer platforms, including partnerships with Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and the 'Concert Kit' tool to help artists reserve tickets for verified individuals, thereby combating scalper bots. World is also collaborating with Razer, Mythical Games, and Reddit to explore identity tools for bot detection in gaming and online communities. On the enterprise side, the company is working with Zoom to develop a 'Deep Face' feature that verifies meeting participants as real humans, and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. Additionally, World is rolling out 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach credentials proving human presence to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce tied to verified individuals. The company is partnering with firms like Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data. According to Sam Altman, co-founder of World, 'World ID is on the way to being a real human network for the internet.'
