Bitcoin Developers Pursue Quantum Defenses, Potentially Locking Coins
The foundation of Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency that has been in existence for 16 years, is built on the premise that no entity, be it a government, bank, or individual, can access your coins without your private key. However, this promise is now being challenged by the developer community as part of efforts to develop defenses against future quantum computers that could compromise the Bitcoin blockchain and result in the theft of your coins. A proposal, known as Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)-361, has been updated on Bitcoin's official repository. The proposal, put forth by Jameson Loop and other cryptographers, suggests that bitcoin holders may be required to transfer their coins to new quantum-resistant addresses or face the possibility of having their coins frozen permanently by the network. Although holders would still technically own the coins, they would lose the ability to move them. This move is part of a broader effort to protect against the potential risks posed by quantum computers, which could potentially compromise the Bitcoin blockchain. A recent Google report warned that a sufficiently powerful quantum machine could compromise the Bitcoin blockchain with less computational power than initially estimated, prompting some to predict a 'quantum deadline' for bitcoin by 2029. The proposal is based on the need to protect against the potential risks posed by quantum computers, which could use a public key, revealed on the blockchain when funds are sent, to reverse-engineer a private key and drain funds. As of March, approximately 6.7 million BTC were in vulnerable addresses, according to the Google study. The BIP-361 proposal outlines a three-phase migration plan, starting with blocking new bitcoin from being sent to old-style, quantum-vulnerable addresses, followed by rendering old-style signatures invalid, effectively freezing coins. A potential rescue phase is still under research, which could allow holders with frozen wallets to prove ownership using a zero-knowledge proof. However, the proposal has sparked controversy within the community, with some viewing it as authoritarian and confiscatory, as it implies that the principle of sovereign control over funds can be overridden. The community backlash is centered around the idea that introducing a mechanism to freeze coins, even in extraordinary circumstances, goes against the fundamental principles of Bitcoin. While developers see it as a defensive measure, the community remains divided on the issue.
