The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to cope with significant new regulatory responsibilities, according to Chairman Mike Selig's congressional testimony. Despite a substantial decline in the agency's workforce under the Trump administration, the CFTC is tasked with overseeing the rapidly expanding cryptocurrency and prediction markets. Selig emphasized the importance of AI in facilitating investigations and surveillance, citing the use of Microsoft's Copilot AI tool as a key productivity aid. When questioned about staff reductions, Selig asserted that the agency is operating more efficiently and effectively.

The CFTC is currently handling numerous investigations into prediction markets, with Selig acknowledging the need for robust enforcement. The agency's budget request for the upcoming year includes a modest increase in enforcement staff, but lawmakers have expressed concerns about the adequacy of resources to regulate these emerging markets.

The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, currently being considered by the Senate, would grant the CFTC a central role in regulating non-securities crypto trading, while the agency is also asserting its jurisdiction over prediction markets. Selig's predecessor, former Chairman Rostin Behnam, had previously argued that the agency required more personnel to effectively oversee crypto and prediction markets. The CFTC is working to establish guardrails for US prediction markets and is pursuing policy initiatives in crypto, with Selig committing to move forward with new regulations despite the agency's reduced workforce.
