Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The price of bitcoin, currently at $78,050.30, has surpassed the $78,000 mark, leading to a surge in the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward trend is attributed to improved risk sentiment following the extension of the ceasefire between the US and Iran by President Donald Trump, as well as gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, bitcoin's ascent has provided momentum traders with the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout may attract more buyers, thereby amplifying the momentum. According to the first law of motion, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that can be applied to financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and the recent breakout is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution, citing the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that cryptocurrency trends are currently tied to the price of oil and interest rates. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading at around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The chart of bitcoin's daily price movements shows that the price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a pivotal development. The price piercing through this average typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus now shifting to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900.
