Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its most active quarter on record, with its token price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, marking a new milestone. This surpasses the previous quarterly low of around 90 million transactions in 2023. Ethereum's smart contract system enables the automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely recording actions such as token transfers and smart contract interactions on the blockchain. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025 and has continued to grow, with Q1 2026 seeing a 43% increase in activity from the previous quarter. Despite this growth, Ethereum's native token has declined by over 50% from its August 2025 high. Much of the network's activity is driven by Layer 2 solutions, which provide cheaper transaction processing, and stablecoins, with a record $180 billion in stablecoin supply on Ethereum. While this growth may present opportunities for traders, some analysts caution that Layer 2 activity may be masking base-layer fee pressure, and the long-term impact on Ethereum's price remains to be seen.
