Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The bitcoin price, currently at $78,522.40, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This surge occurred as sentiment improved following the extension of the US-Iran ceasefire by President Donald Trump, with stock index futures also experiencing gains. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's upward movement has given momentum traders the confirmation they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically invest when they observe evidence of an ongoing upward trend. Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as this proof, potentially leading to more buyers entering the market and further increasing momentum. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated that the decreasing bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more being transferred to long-term holders, is leading to increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital is urging caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm noted that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate outlooks. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million.
