Arbitrum Security Council Freezes $71 Million in Ether Linked to Kelp DAO Exploit
Following the significant Kelp DAO exploit, a substantial portion of the stolen funds has been immobilized. Arbitrum's Security Council has successfully frozen roughly $71 million worth of ether, equivalent to 30,766 ETH, by relocating the funds to an intermediary wallet. This wallet can only be accessed through additional governance actions, thereby preventing the exploiter from utilizing the stolen assets. The action was undertaken in collaboration with law enforcement, who provided crucial information regarding the exploiter's identity. The Security Council executed the freeze without affecting any users or applications on the Arbitrum network. This move has effectively recovered about a quarter of the total amount drained from Kelp's LayerZero-powered bridge during the exploit. The incident has sparked an ongoing dispute between Kelp and LayerZero regarding responsibility for the exploit, with the frozen funds potentially offsetting broader socialization of remaining losses. Kelp is currently coordinating with ecosystem partners to establish a recovery fund and exploring next steps, including unpausing, loss socialization, and legal coordination with affected counterparties.
