Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The price of Bitcoin, currently at $77,859.82, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, leading to a surge in the broader cryptocurrency market. This development follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, Bitcoin's upward trend has finally given momentum traders the confirmation they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically buy when they see evidence of an upward trend, and Bitcoin's recent breakout could attract more buyers, further boosting momentum. As stated by the first law of motion, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that, although originally intended for physics, can also be applied to financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant because it can alter market behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 now need to reassess their strategy. Meanwhile, momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a solid foundation to build upon. On-chain indicators also support this trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated on X that the shrinking supply of Bitcoin on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC being transferred to long-term holders, and tightening liquidity, indicates that Bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce. As supply decreases, volatility is likely to increase. However, QCP Capital is advising caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm noted that crypto trends currently seem to be linked to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. The broader market continues to face DeFi security risks, with hacks on the rise. Earlier today, the Sui-based Volo protocol was drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. The chart shows bitcoin's daily price movements, with lines indicating the 100-day and 200-day average prices. Bitcoin's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a significant development because the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash to nearly $60,000. Now that the price has broken through this level, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
