Bitcoin Momentum Traders Get the Green Light
The bitcoin price has surged past $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market, as risk appetite improves following the US-Iran ceasefire extension. This move has ended the prolonged period of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the long-awaited signal to enter the market. Momentum traders typically buy when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's breakout could attract more buyers, further fueling the momentum. Analysts at Marex note that the market's breakout from the $65-$75 range is significant, as it alters market behavior, causing sellers to reassess and momentum buyers to gain confidence. On-chain indicators, such as the decline in coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, suggest continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital urges caution, citing the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, and notes that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest rate expectations. Meanwhile, traditional markets see WTI crude futures trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. DeFi security risks remain a concern, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million, highlighting the need for vigilance. Bitcoin's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a pivotal level, as it previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash. The price piercing through this level typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus now shifting to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900.
