Bitcoin Developers Propose Quantum Defenses, Potentially Freezing Vulnerable Coins
The promise of Bitcoin has always been that no one can access your coins without your private key. However, this promise is now being challenged by the developer community as they attempt to build defenses against potential quantum computer threats. A proposal, known as Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)-361, has been updated and suggests that bitcoin holders may need to migrate their coins to new quantum-resistant addresses or risk having them frozen permanently. This move is an effort to protect against the potential risks of quantum computers, which could compromise Bitcoin's blockchain and steal coins. The proposal, put forward by Jameson Loop and other cryptographers, outlines a plan to freeze coins in vulnerable addresses, effectively rendering them unusable. This comes after a recent Google report warned that a sufficiently powerful quantum machine could compromise the Bitcoin blockchain with less firepower than initially estimated. The report has prompted some to cite 2029 as the deadline for bitcoin to become quantum-resistant. Every Bitcoin wallet is secured by a form of cryptography called ECDSA, which can be thought of as a lock on your wallet. However, a sufficiently powerful quantum machine can use the public key, which is revealed on the blockchain, to reverse engineer the private key and drain the funds. As of March, approximately 6.7 million BTC were in vulnerable addresses, according to the Google study. The BIP-361 proposal outlines a three-phase plan to migrate to quantum-resistant addresses. Phase A would block new bitcoin from being sent to old-style addresses, while Phase B would render old-style signatures invalid, effectively freezing the coins. A potential rescue, known as Phase C, is still under research and could allow holders with frozen wallets to prove ownership using a zero-knowledge proof. The community has pushed back against the proposal, citing concerns that it goes against the fundamental principles of Bitcoin, which promises sovereign control over funds. Many have expressed concerns that the proposal is authoritarian and confiscatory, and that upgrades should be voluntary. Developers, on the other hand, have defended the proposal as a defensive measure, stating that it is necessary to protect the Bitcoin ecosystem from potential threats.
