Kelp DAO Suffers $292 Million Exploit
Recent Developments in Crypto A significant exploit has occurred in the Kelp DAO, resulting in the loss of approximately $292 million. The incident involved a cross-chain bridge that was drained of 116,500 rsETH, which is roughly 18% of the token's circulating supply. The attacker manipulated the system by tricking it into believing a valid instruction had been received from another network, allowing them to release the rsETH to an attacker-controlled address. The Kelp DAO's emergency pauser multisig froze the protocol's core contracts 46 minutes after the successful drain, preventing further damage. North Korea's Crypto Hacking Playbook Less than three weeks after a previous hack, North Korea-linked hackers appear to have carried out another major exploit. The attack on Kelp, a restaking protocol tied to LayerZero's cross-chain infrastructure, suggests an evolution in the tactics used by these hackers. They are no longer just looking for bugs or stolen credentials but are now exploiting the fundamental assumptions built into decentralized systems. The two incidents point to a more organized effort by North Korea to hijack funds from the crypto sector, with over $500 million siphoned in just over two weeks. Aave Affected by Kelp DAO Hack The exploit has also had an impact on Aave, with the attacker depositing 89,567 rsETH into Aave as collateral and borrowing roughly $190 million in ETH and related assets. Aave Labs has moved quickly to contain the risk, freezing rsETH markets and setting loan-to-value ratios to zero. The outcome now depends largely on how Kelp handles the shortfall, with potential losses ranging from $124 million to $230 million. Coinbase Report on Quantum Computing Risks A new report commissioned by Coinbase highlights the potential risks of quantum computing to the crypto industry. While current blockchains remain secure, the report concludes that a future 'fault-tolerant quantum computer' capable of breaking widely used encryption is increasingly plausible. The report stresses the need for preparation and the development of quantum-resistant technologies, with major crypto ecosystems already starting to map out their responses.
