A proposal, known as Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)-361, updated in the official repository, outlines a plan to migrate coins to quantum-resistant addresses or face permanent freezing by the network. This move, spearheaded by contributors like Jameson Loop, aims to protect against the vulnerability of Bitcoin's current cryptography, ECDSA, to quantum computing. With approximately 6.7 million BTC in vulnerable addresses, the stakes are high. The proposal suggests a three-phase approach: first, blocking new transactions to vulnerable addresses; second, rendering old-style signatures invalid, effectively freezing coins; and third, a potential rescue phase using zero-knowledge proofs, allowing holders to prove ownership and recover frozen coins. This drastic measure has sparked backlash within the community, with many viewing it as an infringement upon the core principle of sovereign control over one's funds.
