Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $77,570.53, has surpassed $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This upward movement occurred as market sentiment improved following U.S. President Donald Trump's extension of the Iran ceasefire, with stock index futures also experiencing gains. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's ascent has finally provided momentum traders with the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically purchase assets when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout could attract more buyers, thereby amplifying its momentum. As Newton's first law of motion states, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that, although not originally intended for financial markets, holds relevance. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to the $65-$75 range for months and that breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers waiting for confirmation have a solid foundation to build upon. On-chain indicators also support this outlook, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated on X that 'bitcoin supply on exchanges continues to shrink, with fewer coins available to sell, more BTC moving to long-term holders, and liquidity tightening. Bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce, and reduced supply typically leads to increased volatility.' However, QCP Capital is urging caution due to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm noted that crypto trends seem tied to oil prices and interest rate expectations, stating that 'the path forward remains anchored to oil and policy. A decrease in crude oil prices or clearer Fed signaling would support risk, but without these factors, markets are likely to remain uncertain, pricing in uncertainty rather than resolution.' In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million just days after the KelpDAO incident. In the broader market, the chart shows bitcoin's daily price movements, with the price establishing a firm foothold above the 100-day average. This is significant, as the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash. Now that the price has pierced through this level, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900.
