The Alarming Rise of Crypto-Related Kidnappings in France and the Growing Threat of Wrench Attacks
A surge in crypto-related kidnappings has placed France at the center of a global increase in wrench attacks, which involve using physical force to gain access to digital assets. The country has experienced at least 41 such incidents this year, prompting government officials to acknowledge the severity of the issue and announce plans to implement new measures to tackle the problem. The rise in wrench attacks is attributed to the increasing difficulty of breaking encryption, making it easier for attackers to coerce individuals into revealing their digital assets. Researchers note that attackers are shifting their focus from technical vulnerabilities to identifying and targeting individuals with visible crypto wealth, often using social media activity, public appearances, and leaked datasets to track routines and identify points of weakness. The problem is further exacerbated by insider leaks and compromised state data, which can provide attackers with sensitive information. As a result, the pool of potential victims has expanded, with mid-level holders and even families being targeted. Experts emphasize that anybody can be a potential victim and that the use of physical force to extract access to digital assets is becoming more frequent and violent. To mitigate the risk, security experts recommend implementing measures such as multi-signature setups, withdrawal delays, and spending limits to limit the amount of funds that can be accessed under duress.
