Rethinking Privacy in the Blockchain Era

Blockchains were initially designed as public networks, following the tradition of open-source technology. However, their future is leaning towards private networks, and this transition is happening faster than anticipated. This month, Tempo, a Stripe-backed payment blockchain, released a detailed proposal for private enterprise stablecoin transactions. Given Tempo's strong institutional backing, its prioritization of privacy is a significant indicator of the industry's direction. The question is no longer whether institutional chains will be private, but rather what kind of privacy they will implement. The primary issue with public chains is that all transactions are visible to anyone, which poses a significant problem for financial institutions. The lack of privacy can lead to front-running, strategy mapping, and targeting by criminals. Tempo's solution involves private parallel blockchains, known as Zones, where participants can transact privately, and only cryptographic proofs of validity are visible to the public. However, this model relies on trusting an operator, which may not be ideal for all institutions. An alternative approach is using zero-knowledge cryptography, which enables parties to prove the validity of transactions without revealing the underlying data. This method ensures that no operator has a comprehensive view of transactions, and privacy is enforced at the base layer. The choice between these two privacy models will significantly impact the industry's risk surface, compliance posture, and exposure to intermediary failures. Ultimately, the decision on what type of privacy to implement will determine the course of the blockchain industry.
