Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Firms
The cryptocurrency space is on the cusp of a significant transformation, driven by the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that AI has the potential to revolutionize the way transactions are conducted and verified on decentralized networks, leveraging crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the idea that blockchain technology is well-suited for machine intelligences, but he does not envision humans being replaced. Instead, he predicts that increasingly sophisticated interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with cryptocurrency systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as the intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, Lubin cautioned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. He stressed the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify one another in transparent environments. Products like MetaMask, a Consensys offering, are being revamped to reflect this shift, with Lubin describing the wallet as a 'new kind of neobank that you own and control,' part of a transition toward a 'personal money operating system.' AI-powered agents could potentially act on behalf of users, managing assets and executing transactions within a growing decentralized economy. Lubin also highlighted the rise of 'corporate chains' on Ethereum, where companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he expects assets to be issued on Ethereum's base layer for optimal durability, he noted that stablecoins are a 'stepping stone' toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Tokenization, in his view, marks a convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems to create a more granular and programmable global economy. Despite the potential risks associated with quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
