Arbitrum Security Council Freezes $71 Million in Ether Linked to Kelp DAO Exploit
Following the significant Kelp DAO exploit, a substantial portion of the stolen funds has been immobilized. Arbitrum's Security Council took decisive action, freezing 30,766 ETH valued at roughly $71 million. This move transfers the compromised funds into an intermediary wallet, which can only be accessed through additional governance procedures. The action was taken in collaboration with law enforcement, which provided crucial input on the exploiter's identity. This proactive measure ensures that the stolen funds, tied to the $292 million rsETH exploit, are no longer under the control of the original address. The transfer was completed on April 20 at 11:26 p.m. ET, according to Arbitrum's official statement. This recovery accounts for about a quarter of the total amount drained from Kelp's LayerZero-powered bridge during the exploit. The incident highlights the role of Arbitrum's Security Council in taking emergency actions to protect the network, albeit introducing a level of discretionary control over user funds. This development also impacts the ongoing discussion between Kelp and LayerZero regarding responsibility for the exploit, as it provides a $71 million offset before other recovery measures are considered. The ability to freeze additional stolen funds depends on the attacker's subsequent actions and the responses of other chains involved.
