Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its most active quarter to date, with the network's native token price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the base layer of the network processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, marking the first time it has surpassed this threshold in a single quarter. In 2023, quarterly transactions hit a low of around 90 million before stabilizing between 100 million and 120 million in 2024. Ethereum is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, recording transactions such as ether transfers, smart contract interactions, and token transfers on its blockchain. The surge in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025, with each successive quarter showing higher activity, resulting in a 43% increase in Q1 2026 compared to Q4 2025. Despite this growth, the native token ether has declined by over 50% from its August 2025 high, presenting a potential opportunity for traders. Much of the network's traffic is driven by Layer 2s, separate networks built on top of Ethereum that offer cheaper transactions, and stablecoins, which have reached a record $180 billion in total supply on the network. While this growth may mask base-layer fee pressure, it suggests that Ethereum's usage has completed a multi-year recovery, potentially preceding a price movement.
