Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The bitcoin price, currently at $78,239.56, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, leading to a surge in the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward movement follows an improvement in risk sentiment after the US President extended the ceasefire with Iran, also resulting in gains for stock index futures. After weeks of fluctuating between $65,000 and $75,000, bitcoin has finally given momentum traders the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically buy when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout could lead to more buyers entering the market, thus amplifying the momentum. As a principle of motion states, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been capped within the $65 to $75 range for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters behavior. Sellers who were previously comfortable with fading rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also point to the same trend, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges dropping to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more BTC moving to long-term holders, is resulting in increased scarcity and potentially higher volatility. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, noting that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate outlooks. The path forward remains influenced by oil and policy, with a potential decrease in crude or clearer Fed signaling supporting risk. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing from a low of $78 on Friday. DeFi security risks persist as hacks continue, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million.
