Wall Street Demands More Than Just Promises of Security
The crypto market has grown significantly, with daily trading volumes reaching $190-$192 billion. Despite this growth, the security of crypto exchanges remains a concern. In 2025, over $3 billion in crypto assets were stolen, with several major exchanges experiencing losses of over $1 billion each. These breaches occurred despite the exchanges having ample resources and technology, indicating that the issue lies not with funding, but with the approach to security. The industry often prioritizes appearances over actual security, investing in dashboards, reserve snapshots, and public statements that create a false sense of security. This approach, known as 'security theater,' focuses on optics rather than genuine risk management. To build trust, exchanges must adopt a more robust approach to security, one that includes proof-of-reserves, strict internal rules, and quick incident response. This includes implementing measures such as transparent asset and liability reporting, independent audits, and verifiable proof of reserve holdings. Exchanges must also establish strict rules for accessing customer funds, including multi-person approval for large transfers and triggers for unusual activity. Furthermore, they must be prepared to respond quickly and effectively in the event of a breach, isolating the issue, communicating clearly with users, and preventing further damage. As the industry continues to evolve, it is clear that a simple 'trust us' approach will no longer be sufficient. Exchanges must demonstrate their commitment to security through tangible actions and verifiable evidence, rather than just reassuring words.
