The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is embracing artificial intelligence to cope with significant staffing reductions, according to Chairman Mike Selig's congressional testimony. Despite a decline of approximately 25% in the CFTC's workforce since 2025, largely due to President Donald Trump's federal workforce reduction demands, the agency is leveraging AI and automation to fulfill its growing responsibilities in overseeing cryptocurrency and prediction markets.

Selig emphasized the importance of AI in enhancing efficiency and effectiveness, particularly in monitoring and investigating these rapidly evolving markets. The CFTC is currently handling numerous investigations into potential insider trading and other illicit activities within the prediction markets, with Selig affirming a 'zero tolerance' policy towards such behavior.

However, concerns have been raised about the agency's capacity to effectively regulate these markets with its current staffing levels, prompting calls for increased funding and personnel to ensure the CFTC can adequately perform its duties.
