Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Sounds Alarm on AI Control by Tech Giants

The next significant milestone in the crypto space is anticipated to emerge from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a discussion with CoinDesk, Lubin highlighted the potential for autonomous and semi-autonomous agents to facilitate transactions, coordinate activities, and verify each other on decentralized networks, leveraging cryptocurrency frameworks as the basis for machine-driven interactions. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the concept that blockchain technology is particularly suited for machine intelligences, but he does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, he envisions increasingly sophisticated interfaces that will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as the intermediary layer between individuals and protocols. However, this vision also carries risks, as Lubin cautioned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could lead to trouble. He stressed the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling transparent, verifiable environments where machines can monitor each other. As part of this broader transformation, products like MetaMask are undergoing significant changes. Lubin described MetaMask as evolving into a new type of neobank that users own and control, marking a shift toward what he termed a 'personal money operating system.' AI-powered agents could potentially act on behalf of users, managing assets, executing transactions, and navigating the expanding decentralized economy. Lubin noted that this development would allow individuals to carry their personal financial systems with them. Beyond interface changes, Lubin also pointed to structural shifts within the Ethereum ecosystem, particularly the emergence of 'corporate chains' as companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he expects this trend to continue, Lubin emphasized that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer, as this ensures their durability and longevity, even if they are later utilized across other networks. Stablecoins, which are among the fastest-growing sectors in crypto, are part of this transition but not the ultimate goal. Lubin views them as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems, acknowledging that current models still rely heavily on centralized issuers. Over time, he anticipates growth in decentralized collateral, which will enable more robust and crypto-native forms of money. Regarding tokenization, Lubin suggested that traditional finance and decentralized finance are entering a period of convergence, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. This convergence is expected to result in a more granular and programmable global economy. Despite these advancements, Lubin adopted a cautious stance on long-term technical risks such as quantum computing, stating that while it is not an immediate concern, Ethereum developers have been preparing for it over the years. He views quantum computing as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum, rather than a significant threat.
