The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to the World ID system, positioning it as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online by focusing on authentication, payments, and internet services. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for a face and iris scan to generate a unique cryptographic code. The update features a redesigned architecture for improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. Additionally, the company is introducing a dedicated World ID app and expanding partnerships with various platforms to embed its identity layer across consumer and enterprise services, such as verified human badges on dating apps and proof-of-human checks in digital agreements.
