Grandson of Infamous Mob Boss John Gotti Sentenced to Prison for Covid-19 Relief Fund Scam and Crypto Investment Scheme

Carmine Agnello, the grandson of the infamous mob boss John Gotti, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for his role in a $1.1 million Covid-19 relief fund scam, where he fraudulently obtained disaster relief loans and invested a substantial amount in cryptocurrency businesses, according to the Department of Justice. In a statement, the US Attorney's Eastern District of New York office revealed that Agnello had submitted false information to the Small Business Administration between April 2020 and November 2021, claiming the funds were for his autoparts and recycling business in Queens. Instead, he used approximately $420,000 of the proceeds for personal gain, including investments in cryptocurrency. Agnello is set to begin his prison term on July 1. The case is part of a larger issue of Covid-19 relief fund fraud, with an estimated $135 billion lost to scams. Agnello's grandfather, John Gotti, was a notorious figure who headed the Gambino crime family and was convicted of 13 criminal counts in 1992, before dying in federal prison in 2002.
