Strategy Surpasses BlackRock's IBIT in Bitcoin Holdings Following Strategic Purchases During Market Downturn
For the first time since Q2 2024, Strategy (MSTR) has surpassed BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) in bitcoin holdings, with a total of $77,916.19 in BTC. This milestone comes after MSTR's third-largest bitcoin purchase, which added 34,164 BTC to its portfolio, bringing the total to 815,061 BTC. In comparison, IBIT currently holds 802,824 BTC, putting Strategy ahead by over 12,000 BTC. Although the difference may seem minor, it holds symbolic significance given IBIT's remarkable growth since its launch. Unlike IBIT, a passively managed spot ETF, Strategy employs financial engineering techniques, including at-the-market equity issuance and perpetual preferred securities, to accumulate bitcoin in a leveraged manner. This approach has enabled Strategy to rise by approximately 250% since the start of 2024, outpacing IBIT's 55% gain. Notably, Strategy accelerated its bitcoin accumulation during the recent market downturn, adding nearly 80,000 BTC in 2026, while IBIT's holdings remained relatively stable.
