The World project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to date, aiming to establish a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul, announced in San Francisco, addresses growing concerns within the tech industry regarding bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. The project's system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to create a unique cryptographic code for each user, which serves as proof of humanity. To obtain a World ID, users must visit an Orb in person, where their face and iris are scanned to generate the code. The images are then deleted, and only anonymized fragments of the code are sent across a distributed network to verify the user's uniqueness. The result is a credential that proves someone is a unique human online without revealing their identity or personal data. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and Zoom, where a feature called 'Deep Face' verifies meeting participants' identities. Additionally, World is working with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. The project aims to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data, with collaborations with firms like Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase.
