Bitcoin Breakout: Momentum Traders Get the Green Light
The bitcoin price, currently at $78,454.03, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, giving a boost to the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward movement follows an improvement in risk sentiment after the U.S. President extended the ceasefire with Iran, also leading to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's ascent has finally given momentum traders the signal they were waiting for to invest. Momentum traders typically buy when they see evidence of an upward trend, and bitcoin's breakout serves as that proof, potentially attracting more buyers and adding to the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market's breakout from its months-long range between $65 and $75 is significant as it changes investor behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers have the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, indicating continued investor accumulation that could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, suggesting that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate outlooks. Despite this, with WTI crude futures trading around $90 and having bounced back from a low of $78 on Friday, the path forward remains uncertain. In the broader market, DeFi security risks persist due to hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol recently drained of over $3 million. The chart of bitcoin's daily price movements shows that the price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is pivotal as it previously capped the bounce in January. Now, with the price having pierced through this average, the focus shifts to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900, signaling a potential strengthening of bullish momentum.
