Crypto Market Hit by Massive Exploit: $292 Million Stolen from Kelp DAO
A significant exploit has occurred in the cryptocurrency market, with an attacker draining a substantial amount of restaked ether from Kelp DAO's LayerZero-powered bridge. The incident, which took place on Saturday, involved the theft of 116,500 rsETH, valued at around $292 million. This amount represents roughly 18% of the token's circulating supply. The bridge in question held the rsETH reserve that backed wrapped versions of the token on over 20 other blockchains. The attacker managed to trick LayerZero's cross-chain messaging layer into releasing the funds to an attacker-controlled address. In response, Kelp's emergency pauser multisig froze the protocol's core contracts, and several other DeFi platforms, including Aave, SparkLend, and Fluid, have also taken measures to mitigate potential losses. The incident has raised concerns about the potential for panic redemptions and the impact on the broader DeFi market.
