Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal to Buy

The bitcoin price, currently at $78,758.19, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, resulting in a boost to the broader cryptocurrency market. This development follows an improvement in risk sentiment after the U.S. President extended the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. The recent price movement has ended the period of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically purchase assets when there is evidence of an upward trend, and bitcoin's recent breakout is a clear indication of this. As a result, more buyers may enter the market, further accelerating the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market's breakout from the $65 to $75 range is significant, as it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategies, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges reaching a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange noted that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, combined with fewer coins available for sale and increasing liquidity, could result in increased volatility. However, QCP Capital is urging caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which could indicate a potential price drop. The firm also noted that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The bitcoin price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a significant development, as this average previously capped the bounce in January. Now, the focus shifts to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
