Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of Big Tech Dominance in AI

The next significant turning point for cryptocurrency is expected to come from advancements in artificial intelligence. According to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum, autonomous or semi-autonomous agents will leverage decentralized networks and crypto infrastructure to facilitate transactions, coordination, and verification. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, envisions a future where increasingly intelligent interfaces simplify user interactions with crypto systems, allowing people to engage with these systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI acting as an intermediary layer. However, he also warns of the dangers of AI infrastructure being controlled by a few large tech firms, emphasizing the need for decentralized systems and cryptography to ensure accountability and transparency. Products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect this shift, with plans to transform into a user-controlled, AI-driven "personal money operating system" that enables users to manage assets and execute transactions. The Ethereum ecosystem is also undergoing structural changes, with the expected rise of "corporate chains" and the growth of stablecoins as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems. Lubin views tokenization as a key area of convergence between traditional and decentralized finance, leading to a more granular and programmable global economy. While acknowledging the potential risks of quantum computing, Lubin adopts a cautious stance, noting that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality as part of the platform's natural evolution.
