Bitcoin is currently trading at $78,521.31 with a positive outlook, surpassing the critical $75,000 level that is essential for bulls to retain control. However, analysts advise caution, emphasizing the need for prices to remain above this threshold beyond Wednesday, when the U.S.-Iran ceasefire is set to expire.
The market is bracing for two possible outcomes: an extension and de-escalation, or renewed escalation and increased oil prices. According to analysts at Marex, this uncertainty poses headline risk with a timer. If the conflict escalates, oil prices could exceed $119, potentially causing a downturn in Asian and global equity markets.
It remains to be seen whether bitcoin will continue to demonstrate resilience, as it did during the March conflict when it stabilized around $70,000. As of now, no Iranian delegation has departed for talks in Pakistan, and President Donald Trump has warned of a significant escalation if the ceasefire ends without a deal. Another key event on the horizon is Kevin Warsh's nomination hearing for Federal Reserve chair, scheduled for Tuesday. Warsh's reputation as an 'inflation hawk' who opposed interest-rate cuts and quantitative easing following the 2008 crash could influence market expectations.
His remarks may act as a near-term catalyst, particularly if they reinforce expectations of policy easing. Meanwhile, major cryptocurrencies like ether, solana, and XRP have seen modest gains of less than 2% over the past 24 hours, underperforming bitcoin. Smaller tokens such as XLM and TON have experienced more significant increases, with gains of over 5% each.
The CoinDesk Memecoin Index has risen by more than 3%. Notably, the DeFi Select Index has added 2%, despite the industry-wide fallout from the weekend hack of KelpDAO, which resulted in the attacker draining rsETH, a widely used liquid restaking token. Decentralized lender Aave has been severely impacted, with the total value of crypto assets locked on its platform falling to $16 billion, a decline of nearly $10 billion since before the hack. Aave's native token, AAVE, has declined by 18% to $93, while open interest in futures tied to the token has reached a record high, indicating potential for increased volatility.
