Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The bitcoin price has surged past $78,000, bolstering the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward movement occurred as risk appetite improved following the extension of the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran by President Donald Trump, with stock index futures also experiencing gains. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, bitcoin's ascent has provided momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically enter the market when they identify an upward trend. Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as this proof, potentially attracting more buyers and intensifying the momentum. According to Newton's first law of motion, an object in motion will continue unless acted upon by an external force. Analysts at Marex noted, 'The market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months. Breaking out of this range is significant as it alters behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation have something to rely on.' On-chain indicators also support this view. For example, the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued accumulation by investors, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated, 'Bitcoin supply on exchanges continues to dwindle, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC being transferred to long-term holders, and liquidity decreasing. Bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce – reduced supply leads to increased volatility.' However, QCP Capital is advising caution due to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit. The firm noted that crypto trends currently seem linked to oil prices and interest rate expectations. 'The path forward remains tied to oil and policy. A decrease in crude oil prices or clearer signaling from the Fed would support risk appetite. In the absence of this, markets are likely to remain in a holding pattern, pricing uncertainty rather than resolution,' QCP Capital said in a market update. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing from a low of $78 on Friday. DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. The chart shows bitcoin's daily price movements, with lines indicating the 100-day and 200-day average prices. Bitcoin's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is pivotal as it previously capped the bounce in January. The focus now shifts to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900.
